The True Value of a Portrait

I read this post on a photographer's blog that I met at WPPI in Las Vegas last year. I wanted to share the post with all of you :)

With many inexperienced amateurs purchasing digital cameras and charging less and less for a session, I want to share the true value of a portrait. As a consumer, it is important to be educated in what you are paying for and the worth of what you are getting.

Most of what we do, our clients never see and the actual session is such a small part of what is involved.

We do this every day. Our clients may only do this once every year or even 5 years. It is important to hire a professional who will find out what you want and help you to achieve that.

Expenses:

helpful guides for clients including clothing and the displaying of prints in the home – A professional photographer does not like to leave your session to chance and will share helpful information to give you the best session possible.
software – It is not uncommon at all for a photographer to have over $1500 worth of software that needs to be continually upgraded, plus extras each year for giving you the most professional, and artistic images.
computer – The professional cameras continue to improve and constantly require updated software and computer systems. It would absolutely amaze most people to know how slow the large files can be to work with and the cost of continually upgrading.
camera – Most professional photographers have more than entry level digital cameras. Professional photography can be hard on a camera, especially if a photographer shoots in elements such as the beach. This will require additional cleanings and new equipment.
lighting
props
reflectors
lenses
education – Education is a constant in the life of a true professional photographer.
insurance
licenses, fees
professional, legal forms
advertising
display samples
assistants

The ACTUAL time that a professional photographer puts into a session:

corresponding and telephone calls for forms and consulting before a session (30-60 minutes)
planning – a photographer will spend time planning and preparing for your session, including scouting, posing, correct equipment, etc. (60+ minutes)
the session (1+ hours)
choosing the best images, eliminating blinks, etc (1-2 hours)
professionally processing the images (6-8 hours)
ordering and packaging of prints (if ordered) (1+ hours)
uploading images or making CD (about 1 hour)

So, at this point, we are looking at approximately 17 actual hours that go into a session, not to mention the time that a photographer spends additionally each week just to conduct business (advertising, website maintenance, education, ordering supplies, maintaining books and records, correspondence, telephone calls, exploring new industry information, etc.). While it appears that a photographer just shows up and works for an hour or two, there is so much more to what a professional photographer does.

Add to that the actual expenses that a photographer has, most of which you may not actually see because they are behind the scenes, and you will see why you will not find a professional photographer offering their services for next to nothing. They simply cannot afford to stay in business.

So, what makes a photographer worth the money? These are your portraits. Life is fragile and fleeting. One day these images will hold your memories. These images will become your memories. Most of what we remember, was captured in a picture. It is not likely that you will find professional portraits at chain department store pricing. A professional photographer just cannot stay in business at those prices. And at a chain department store, you will probably not find the artistic images that you are looking for in a 15 minute session from someone making minimum wage working there for the summer or for extra money over the holidays. Sometimes, we just have to make a choice.

You get what you pay for when it comes to professional portraits. They are an investment and will be one of the very few purchases that you will still have in 20, 30 years, or even a lifetime. The importance of these memories go so far beyond the paper they are printed on, or the hard drive they are stored on.

Anne + Brad - The Engagement

I just made a trip down to Calendonia to meet up with Anne and Brad and photograph their engagement session on Brad's farm.

What an awesome place to take photographs. We started just right by the barn and made our way out onto their land in the utility vehicle. Hopefully get to do their trash the dress session out there too in the stream and more open pastures.

Emma Joy and Family

She's back again, this cute little lady Emma Joy. For some of you that have seen a few of her images from last year and know her story, thanks for reading again.

Here is the story I posted last year for the new people that don't know about Emma Joy.

Emma Joy Groll was born on July 1st 2008 she was such a perfect little baby 6 lbs 3 oz 21 inches long. I was so happy to finally have a brunette baby! Her and i stayed up late watching tv that night at the hospital. We bonded that night! Not knowing what the next day would bring. The doctor came in the next morning around 11 am. Checking her like they normally do. I remember looking at the doctors face she kept putting her stethoscope up to Emma's chest. She took her out of the room just to take a look at her further. She said I think it should only take a few minutes..2 hours later the news came. The cardiologist from the pediatric department came in..I remember her look..I will never forget her face.

I was so confused that next 20 minutes her explaining that my daughter had Hypo-plastic Left Syndrome. She was born without the left ventricle of her heart.(emma was actually born with a small not developed left ventricle )
The three options they gave us were
1- Take her home to pass away
2- A heart transplant..but they cant guarantee that she would get a heart in time. Or her body might reject it and she will die.
3- Have 3 open heart surgeries in a matter of 2-3 years

We sat there in disbelief! What my baby might die. At that point all i wanted to do was do everything in my power to save my baby. As the doctor was talking to us they rushed emma up to the PICU of the hospital to hook her up to medication to help keep a ductus open for blood flow in her body. If it wasn't for that ductus that stayed open longer then what it usually does she would have gone into cardiac arrest. But thank the Lord hers stayed open!!
They flew her by jet an hour later to Childrens Hospital of Milwaukeer.We did not go home for almost 4 months!

On July 10th 2008 Emma joy had her first open heart surgery called the Norwood surgery. That was a long recovery. Then on September 29th 2008 Emma had to have an early 2nd surgery do to her heart starting to give up..it was time for the Glenn open heart surgery. We finally were able to come home on October 12th 2008. It was a long haul especially being away from our other 2 little girls for so long. We have been home since. A couple nights hospital stay since but other wise Emma is doing great. She is growing like any other child.
What may the outcome of her life persist of. It is a question for everyone. We really don't know. The oldest person living with HLHS is only 23 years of age. They say Emma will probably need a heart transplant at some point. But HLHS babies living is a brand new thing. Her next surgery we are guessing will probably be spring of 2011. Then after that close a whole in her heart later on. But we are trusting our God that He will keep her healthy and live a long life with her family and friends.

Emma doesn't go anywhere because of her heart condition. We cant take the chance of getting her sick. So for Jared coming into our home and helping us take Emma joys first pictures EVER! Was not only a blessing but such a great gift. I was so unbelievably overwhelmed with joy when he showed me her pictures! I never thought anyone could capture the love that is in those eyes of hers that I see every day. The fight for life that she has. Jared is an amazing photographer and now we would like to call friend. We for sure wont be using anyone else. Thank you Jared! You have done something for us that we wont ever forget. God Bless!!

I was so excited to see the girls again, and especially Emma Joy. There is just something about this little angel that makes me smile. The cutest little girl, she's always so happy running around. Now she's talking and giggeling like never before.

It is an honor to be trusted and welcomed into their home to photograph their family, and to be able to watch their little ones grow every year. It's amazing to see the love and devotion that you two have together and with your family. I cannot imagine all of the things Liz and Justin have been through with everything throughout the years with hospital visits, stay overs, and hardly being able to go on a family vacation because of Emma's condition and the risk of her being sick. I am working on something for your family that I plan on announcing May 1st that I hope you are as excited about it as I am. Thanks again for allowing me to come into your home to photograph your family!

Photographers weekend-Jennifer Whalen and Eric Wuennenberg

Haven't posted for awhile, been crazy busy trying to get caught up on some stuff!!

Just a quick post from last weekend. A good friend and old mentor Eric Wuennenberg of Performance Photo out of Westby Wisconsin (www.Performancephoto.net) came up to my place in Hudson this weekend for a photoshoot with some fashion models and a tag along with photographer Jennifer Whalen (www.JenniferWhalen.com). Jennifer photographed a couple of her friends with some experimental lighting that Eric and I assisted and hung out at the Guthrie Theatre downtown Minneapolis, so go check out her blog to see some of the shots we helped out on.

After a few hours of helping out, Eric wanted a headshot of himself for his website so we set up in a little cove by the elevator bank with a really neat dark blue window behind. I set up the light for a couple quick shots and we were out of there.

Eric and I also attended a Scott Kelby training workshop from 10-5 last Monday for some live shooting and retouching from a big name pro. It was a neat workshop and learned some useful editing techniques and always fun catching up with a good friend and talking photography for a day or two. Eric also came back this past weekend for another seminar at the Hilton in Minneapolis for Sandy Puc and Jerry Ghionis.

In my opinion Jerry is one of the best wedding photographers in the WORLD. I have seen him twice in Vegas at WPPI and again last weekend in the cities. He is so inspirational and his work is breath taking. I look up to Jerry and his work, and am constantly going to seminars and workshops to learn and educate myself to get better for my future brides :)

Shane + Barb - The Proposal

Today I had one of the neatest experiences in my life. I do get to travel a lot to photograph weddings, but today was a first for me. A good friend, Shane, had told me he was going to propose to his girlfriend in March and that he wanted me to photograph the proposal. I knew I was going to be home the last week of March and that is actually when he planned on doing it, so it worked out great. Started off this morning at about 5AM to a text message "Want to go get breakfast, I can't sleep" I responded back at about 8AM "Still sleeping....8:30AM I'll meet you at Jacqlyns" We talked a little bit about it there, and asked if he was going to be ready to do it at around 11AM so I could head back home to Hudson. We met at the mall, you could tell he was a little nervous, he was going to do it at her work. All of you know her, she is the cute little short choppy haired lady that is the manager of the Buckle, Barb :)

The excitement to photograph this was awesome and as I walked into the store with this monster camera, I went up to a table, put it down and put a pair of jeans over it (not thinking clearly of covering the strap) so Barb was with a customer and we were walking around and we see her go up to the table where my camera was hidden so we freaked out because she placed a pair of jeans right next to the camera strap and I thought for sure she saw it, but she didnt...

Shane told her to come over by him and she replied back with an "I'm busy..just hold on" No. No. come over here quick I need to talk to you about something......and the rest was history.

Shannon + David - The Aspen Colorado Wedding/Trash the Dress

After a long day of traveling Thursday, a three hour drive from Denver in the snow and rain, we finally arrived at the Silver Tree Hotel just outside of Aspen in Smowmass Village Colorado. I was so excited for an amazing wedding up on the mountain Saturday. Friday was a free day up until about 5PM, so a friend Mike and I hit the slopes around 8:30 in the morning. A fresh 9 inches of powder and a really neat low level bed of clouds overlooking the mountain tops at 11,500 feet was incredible.
I met the wedding party at Cafe Suzzanne for lunch, which was a little cabin up on the mountain. After lunch they wanted to go up to the top of the Elk Camp run because it was a spectacular view of the mountains for a quick group photo.
Rehersal dinner was at the Roaring Forks Mountain Club just down from the hotel. Grilled burgers, chicken, mashed potatoes, and desert was amazing.I started with the girls at the Snowmass Village Salon with hair appointments around 11:30 in the morning, hung out there for awhile and then went up to Shannon's parents room where she was going to be getting into her dress.Shannon was glowing with joy, she was so happy and proud to be getting married. After she finished up getting ready, I set up her and father for a first moment, and then again the same for the groom David after I ran downstairs to grab a quick portrait of him.

The hotel was nice enough to let us into a suite for their first moments on the top floor that was vacant, but we found a hallway that had a little nicer lighting.

The wedding was taking place at the Lynn Britt Cabin, which was a 10 minute snowcat ride up the mountain. Cozy little cabin that held up to about 100 people MAX, however they had 30 people that traveled to their wedding.

It was an amazing experience to be photographing a wedding on a mountain at this little cabin, and the only way to and from it after hours was by snowcat.
Sunday morning around 8am we took off for the hill for a quick trash the dress session with their wedding attire on. David has been skiing for years, even a ski instructor, and has raced as well! Shannon got into skiing about a year ago after falling in love with it during a few ski lessons from David.
What an awesome couple, awesome group of people to be spending 4 days with in Aspen Colorado. Couldn't have asked for better weather, other than -15 mph winds on the actual wedding day for the ceremony. Snowboarding in 9 inches of fresh powder was the neatest thing I've done in the winter.

Mollie + Jesse - The Riviera Maya Mexico Wedding/Trash the Dress

I don't even know where to start....Showing up at Dream's Resort in Riviera Maya, Puerto Adventuras, I knew I was in for a treat the next couple days, since I've already got to know the Delagrave's a little bit this summer out on the river.

The entire group of just over 20 was a blast, couldn't have asked for a better group of people to soak up some ray's, drink some adult beverages, and capture the love of this amazing couple and family.

I started the trip in sort of reverse order with a mini-engagement at 11am and then a trash the dress session in the afternoon after a catamaran tour and snorkeling. They were originally supposed to be married in March, and had to switch the date due to airline schedule, and asked if I could photograph their wedding February 19th as I was scheduled to leave for Las Vegas on Saturday the 20th for a photography convention at the MGM Grand, so I didn't have much time to do a post wedding trash the dress because I was leaving at 7am on Saturday.

After the quick engagement session, we all met up to head down to the marina to catch the catamaran! 85, sunny, calm water....We sailed past Dream's and the chain of resorts towards a reef about a 45 minute cruise where we were going to be snorkeling. What an amazing group as you can see in the pictures, they WERE NOT much fun at all :)

After getting back to the resort, Mollie and Jesse quickly changed and met me back downstairs for their mini-trash the dress session. Mollie had two dresses, a shorter one for trash the dress and then an amazing dress for the wedding day.

The Wedding day

I started with a few details before meeting Mollie around 2pm, the ceremony was at 3 in the afternoon out in the gazebo almost floating off the shoreline over the water.

Mollie and Jesse wrote their own vows, and as AJ (The best Man), Jesse and I got a drink or two, we would ask Jesse, how his vows were coming. He told us that they were coming, he stayed up late one night or got up early one day and wrote them. I told him he was probably going to make me cry since I am big teddy bear, and get emotional at almost every wedding which is why I love my job so much, all of the emotion....Sure enough, as soon as Jesse dropped a tear, I dropped one as well.

After the ceremony they had a cocktail hour before the reception and I took that opportunity to let the sun go down a little, photograph a few reception details, before we took some pictures of the wedding party and a few of Mollie and Jesse alone.They started the reception right away with the first dance, then to father-daughter. They also hired a violinist to play during dinner which was a great touch to their small, romantic candle lit dinner.

Mollie and Jesse wanted something special for the Delagrave's, so after the first portion of the meal, I stole Todd and Deb for a quick portrait session of just the two of them outside. After their quick portrait, as all of my followers know, one of my favorite parts of a wedding are the speeches, and you can see why in these images of this group!

O DOG! - Olivia, maid of honor, Mollie's younger sisters nick name.Their group met a small group of people from Madison that they took in over the week. One of the guys from the group, Tim, got up and gave a small toast during their reception. Tim told it all, he stated how it felt like they knew the wedding group for years, even thought they've only known them for a week or so. They were so warm-hearted, welcoming, and friendly... Couldn't have said it better.Good luck charm on their wedding night, there was a full moon out. I tried to grab a couple night shots of the moon, but doesn't look too full from here, but what an amazing night.____________________________________________________________________

Day Four - 6AM Sunrise - Trash the Dress session

Bright and early, they met me on the beach at 6am for sunrise before I left on my shuttle from the resort at 7am to head to Las Vegas. This was probably one of the coolest sessions I have ever photographed, I hope you can see why.
Time to TRASH THAT DRESS!!!!!! When you look back on your wedding day 15,20, 30 years from now and your kids or grandchildren ask you about your wedding day....What can you tell them, or most importantly show them what you did crazy on your wedding day.

I look at this next image and you can't help but see the love, the happiness, craziness even, but most importantly how much fun they had during their couple days getting married in Mexico.
I can't tell Mollie and Jesse how much fun I had in Mexico for their wedding journey with their family and friends. Thank you so much for inviting me into your family for a few days and allowing me to capture your once in a life time special day. Congrats to Mollie and Jesse and to your families on their new editions!

Traveling

I have been blessed with a fantastic job that allows me to travel around the world photographing weddings. As I am packing today for Riveria Maya, Mexico, I wanted to blog a little bit about traveling since I have been fortunate enough to be traveling so often the last several months.

There is no real outline to this blog, just some random thoughts and tips for anyone that might be traveling in the future.

In roughly the last year I have photographed a wedding or vacationed to: Las Vegas, Nevada, Puerto Rico, Aruba, The Bahamas, I am heading to Riveria Maya Cancun Mexico tomorrow, and Las Vegas again on Sunday, also will be photographing a wedding in Aspen Colorado in March, and lastly will be shooting in Cabo San Lucas Mexico in May.

Here are a handful of my travel Tips:

-Print out any itinerary you may have with flight numbers, boarding times, and lay overs, also hotels, shuttle/transportation, and highlight anything that is important like phone numbers or addresses for your taxi or bus driver.

-Most of the time I think the two hour rule before traveling is bogus, however being a little less stressed by having to sit at your gate for an hour and a half is better than being stressed and having to run to your plane. I have seen people sleeping on their chairs waiting to board the plane, and I have also been in the jetway waiting to board and a couple people come into the jetway panting like they just ran a mile.

-So to ease the stress of being late, show up a few hours early and get to your gate and relax

-When you go through a security check point at an airport, wear slip on shoes, or sandals obviously if it's warm enough, but know that you have to take off your shoes, and if you have a baggy sweatshirt or jacket of any type you have to take that off as well.

Obviously take off any watches, empty your pockets of everything, and its funny because some people that I see go through, they forget to take off their watch and empty their pockets..It saves time if you go to the checkpoint READY.

So, have your shoes off before you get to the line, have your sweatshirt or jacket off, don't wear a belt unless you need to, and if you do wear one, take that off before you get to the line, have your laptop out of its case.

-This one is crucial...DO NOT ARGUE WITH TSA...YOU WILL NOT WIN. I see people trying to argue with TSA members all the time, YOU ARE REDICULOUS-DO NOT ARGUE YOU WILL NOT WIN THAT ARGUEMENT.

-Bring an ipod with a movie on it and some good music to listen to or watch on your flight, if you dont have the ability to pass out on every flight like I do, bring your ipod or MP3 player.

**ANOTHER BIG ONE** BRING A SET OF MEMORY FOAM EAR PLUGS they are under $2 at Target or Wal-Mart. Plan for the worst of having to sit next to a newborn or infant child that is crying, screaming, yelling the whole flight..You will sleep much better not being able to hear them. EAR PLUGS

-If you get motion sickness like my lovely wife, or just want to pass out and sleep for your entire flight....Take 5-7 shots of Tequila just before you board your plane..NO IM JUST KIDDING...Get some tylenol PM or dramamine and take two of them 15 minutes before take off, you will sleep through take off and wake up at landing :) Trust me, I've tried it.

-Lastly, I think traveling for the most part is NOT stressful for me, I love traveling. Going through security, customs, having all of my camera equipment searched, to be is not a big deal, give the airport employees a break ,they are doing their job to keep everyone safe. Take a load off, relax, be early, be prepared, and keep in mind that your plane isn't going anywhere without you, unless you are 10 minutes late for departure.

Off to Mexico for 4 days, then Vegas for 3, then coming home to finish packing and cleaning and my wife and I are moving to Hudson Wisconsin March 1st. Have a great week everyone, stay tuned for Mollie + Jesse - The Riveria Maya, Mexico Wedding and Trash the Dress.

Casey + Dan - The Engagement

Casey and I go back to 6th grade, meeting at Sugar Creek Bible camp....That was forever ago. Casey went to Logan and I went to Holmen, and we always would see eachother through mutual friends at football games, or the good ol High Roller dances, but we kept in touch throughout the years and she has been keeping up with my photography on facebook. When that day came with Dan got down to one knee, I got a call :)

Casey and Dan came over to my place to talk details about their dream wedding day coming up so fast, this June at the Waterfront in La Crosse. They both wanted kind of a winter type engagement session and today could NOT have been a better day. My truck said 50 degrees and it was PERFECT day to photograph this wonderful couple.

You can almost hear Dan's laugh in the picture above.

Casey and Dan met for the first time playing cards at some friends house, so they brought a deck of cards for a portrait of how they met. Great idea to tell your story!
I had so much fun today photographing this couple, they were so in love, fun to be around, and FULL of laughs. Congrats to Casey and Dan on your engagement and I am so excited to be a part of your special day June 18, 2011!

Craig + Shaenna - The Puerto Rico Wedding

Well here I am, back to Puerto Rico for the second time in less than two months for another amazing wedding. It was a completely different experience this time around for Craig and Shaenna’s big day, I've photographed weddings with guests counts from 150,225, 320, and even up to 600. Including me there was a total of twelve (12) people in Puerto Rico for Craig and Shaenna's special day. Their wedding was on the south eastern part of the Island at a little resort called Caribe Playa Beach Resort just south east of the small town Patillas. There was maybe 25 rooms at the resort and all of them were literally 10 yards away from the ocean.

They got married on Saturday, and was I down there Thursday to Monday. As the day started for me around 3PM, I grabbed Shaenna's dress for a couple quick shots of it, as she was relaxing before she got into it and started to do make up and last minute touch ups.

After her sister April, also maid of honor and her mom helped her into the dress, we went around the resort for a portrait session of just Shaenna.

The ceremony was at 5PM on the beach right next to the ocean infront of the resort, Craig's sister was the one preciding the ceremony and did a fantastic job. She did such a great job that we even had a couple winged friends watching from their piers catching some sun.

Shaenna's sister April was her maid of honor, and Craig's long time childhood friend Chad was his best man. I bunked with Chad, super great guy. We ate a lot of oreos, duritos watched some sportscenter and probably drank two cases of water in the couple days I was down there. AND thanks for not snoring Chad!

After the wedding we did the posed pictures of the entire group of 11, some individual family portraits, and then I took them down the beach a little ways for a session of just the two of them on their wedding day. Check out the video on the beach, the breeze was amazing.

After their session, dinner time. We had a fantastic meal of Chicken and Talapia which I heard both were AMAZING, ofcourse I had chicken, and then OBVIOUSLY had some wedding cake.

Sunday - Trash the Dress

During the day, their whole group went to some gardens a couple hours away, and I relaxed on the beach until about 4PM when they got back and got ready for a short trash the dress session before the Superbowl.

For some people that don't know anything about Puerto Rico, I have heard from the natives there that in Puerto Rico there are more cars than people, not a lot of people follow any rules on the roads, they don't use blinkers, they don't move over for cop cars or ambulances and there are A LOT of motorcycles and mopeds. This last shot of the night was probably all three of our favorites. This road had a canopy over it of trees and made for a beautiful shot of it naturally framing Craig and Shaenna. However, as I just mentioned, more cars than people, this road was BUSY, BUSY, BUSY. We got the shot after two tries of having people honking at us and waiting for a gap from both ways of traffic to get it so there wasn't any breaklights or headlights in the shot.

Now, time for the superbowl, we all crowded into Chad and my hotel room because we had the biggest TV.....21 inches big! Had some pop and duritos and watched the big game. The only bummer was we didn't get to see much of the new commercials because every other commerical was in spanish, but in the end... SUPER BOWL 45 CHAMPS - GREEN BAY PACKERS

Monday - Our trip back up to Old San Juan

This was probably one of the most fun adventures in a car I have had in a long time. To start the story I want you to go back up to the top image of the entire Island, and know that the airport is someplace around the letter D on the northern part of the Island. On the way in on Thursday, Craig asked me if I got car sick because the road we were going to go on was crazy curvy for about 20 miles after we got off one of the main highways. I was fine, but it seemed like it never ended. NO one wanted to go back that way because of how crazy the road was at 10-15 mph around the corners, so we found a new route back to San Juan which was to go West from the resort for 20 minutes or so to reach a main highway that goes straight North back up to San Juan.

Well.......as we left, we were on the right track on the green line below, and the green route was the original route we were supposed to take back to San Juan, around the mountain....Our navigator Chad with the map and our amazing driver Craig for some reason had some communication problems along with the GPS not knowing any good roads.... we took a wrong turn and took the route lined in RED, up the mountain..... and down the mountain... As you can see how crazy this road was. We thought we couldn't have found a worse road from our trip down to the resort, but we found a road worse... It was about 10 times worse and I am not lying, it was horrible.

We made it to San Juan safely and went to an old Fort which gaurded the city and was built in the early 1800's. It was amazing to see, and to look over Old San Juan. After we left the fort, we walked downtown Old San Juan and ate at a little restuarant before they took me back to the airport around 3Pm.

I had an amazing trip to Puerto Rico to photograph Craig + Shaenna - The Wedding. It was a pleasure getting to know their family and closest friends that made the trip. Staying up late sitting by the ocean talking with Chad and Craig, being able to watch the Superbowl, eating good food, and even wrestling Shaenna's Dad for an extra piece of wedding cake, I had such a great time.

Thanks to Craig and Shaenna for inviting me to be a part of your family for 5 days and allowing me to capture your special day. Congrats to the newly weds and to their families on your new editions to your family.

Sooo excited about this publication. I owe Vianni, my lovely Puerto Rico bride a thank you for getting her story published along with my images from their wedding.

The story is Vianni was twitting an editor from "Destinations Travel Magazine" about writing an article about planning her own destination wedding in Puerto Rico. The editor, Darlene, thought it was a great idea and asked if she could get her a few images from her wedding.

After I got home from Puerto Rico, I pulled out 6 images from Vianni and Jesse's wedding so she could have a couple to chose from. After she saw them, she emailed me and wanted more, more, more! I sent her 10-15 more images and they increased her story and put alot more images in it.

Darlene later called me to compliment my work at Vianni's wedding and we started talking a little bit about how Darlene used to photograph weddings so her appreciation for art was great. She then asked me to write 500 words about my vision, how I approach weddings, and mostly what I thought some wedding photography trends going into 2011 were. Also to send a couple more images of brides and grooms on their wedding day to go along with my article.

Joanna + Adam - The Engagement

Joanna and I go back to high school friends, a graduate of 2006 from Holmen and state known track star in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, holding a state record of recieving gold medals in the 200 and 400 meter state finals her freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years for a total of 8 gold medals...so what I'm really trying to say is she can run fast.....

After recieving a full ride to Notre Dame to run track there, she graduated and is now coaching track in North Carolina where her and her fiancee Adam live. I met Adam for the first time on their engagement shoot, and I asked what they did for fun, and I had to laugh outloud after he said "Run." Adam ran the 1/2 mile at Notre Dame, and used to run 60 miles a week...a week..... a week...I don't think I even drive 60 miles in a week sometimes.

We met up a couple weeks ago, the day it was 40 degrees and raining. Imagine that Wisconsin weather after we just got dumped on 20+ inches of snow. Joanna mentioned that she liked black and white, and since it was musky grey out, she wouldnt mind a lot of black and white. It was my first ever ALL black and white. We had a great session in Holmen, and then back out at Joanna's parents house just outside of Holmen. Great to see you Joanna and great to meet you Adam, congrats on your engagement!

Wow...What an amazing year 2010 was for me. I was so excited to blog today and give you Jared Lee Photography's 2010 in a nutshell with just over 100 of my favorite images from Weddings and Engagement sessions.

Before I get to the images I want to individually thank every single person I have worked with in 2010. You guys are what made this job such an amazing experience for me, to be able to travel and photograph weddings in many different cities around the midwest including, La Crosse, Onalaska, West Salem, Sparta, Rochester, La Crescent, Bangor, Tomah, Eau Claire, North St. Paul, Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Dells, and to the start of my Destination Wedding career photographing in Las Vegas Nevada, and Puerto Rico.

Vianni + Jesse - Puerto Rico Trash the Dress

After an amazing day photographing Vianni and Jesse's wedding at the El Conquistador Resort in Puerto Rico, we all met for breakfast around 10am, and off to Palimeno Island for a day in the sun and a little rest and relaxation before the newly weds and I met up for their mini Trash the Dress/portrait session since we didn't have much time the day of the wedding due to running out of light.

Again want to thank everyone that was down there for welcoming me and making my trip that much more amazing.

Also some great news today from the editor of "Destinations Travel Magazine" that Vianni will be on the front cover, superimposed over another background. Vianni had met the editor on Twitter and had talked to her about writing an article about planning her own destination wedding. Darlene, the editor, thought it would be a great fit for their January 2011 issue and wanted a couple photos to run with her article. Well after seeing the photos, she wanted more :) I will be posting another blog later about Vianni and Jesse's wedding being published, so excited I could be a part of their special day.

Vianni + Jesse - The Wedding - El Conquistador Resort Puerto Rico

Vianni + Jesse - The Wedding - El Conquistador Resort on the farthest most East point of Puerto Rico.

I can't tell you how excited I am to post this wedding. This is on the top...Everything about this wedding was simply amazing. Vianni and Jesse both looked amazing, both of their families were so genuine, caring, and welcoming. All of Vianni and Jesse's friends that made the trip down were a blast, got to spend a lot of time with all of them, at the beach, hot tubbing until weee hours of the night, breakfast and dinner, at the wedding, almost all day everyday, we all laughed at the movie one liners, laughed with Ben, and Jason's impersonations "HELLLO, you kinda sound like you're from LONDON!" I had an amazing time for the last 5 days, 4 nights spending time with Vianni and Jesse's closest friends and family.

The Wedding was on Saturday, and I started with some details before I met up with Vianni at the hair salon. I went up to her mom's room, and grabbed the wedding dress to do a couple shots with that and then went and did some details that Vianni had with her at the salon.
I was standing in the salon and I was trying to come up with a ring shot of their wedding and just couldn't find anything to do that kind of said "Puerto Rico" but I was looking around, and I asked Vianni what her favorite color was, and she replied blue. Looked around a few more minutes, and found it. The orchids on her bridesmaids boquets were blue :) check it out.
After hanging with Vianni for a bit, I went over to Jesse's room to hang with the guys for a bit. Then I took Jesse on a quick portrait session before Vianni was ready to go on hers since they weren't seeing eachother before the ceremony.

Both Jesse's mom and Vianni wanted a photograph of her putting Vianni's necklace on before her portrait session.

Almost time for the ceremony. Finished up Vianni's session, and met up with the guys again while Vianni hid so Jesse wouldn't see her until she was walking down the isle with her father Edwardo.

Vianni's father Edwardo is a judge in Puerto Rico, and was actually the one presiding the ceremony for them, which was very special to Vianni for her dad to be a part of the wedding in that way.

The ceremony was at 530PM, so right after as it was getting dark I took them on a quick portriat session before we ran out of light, and went inside to do the posed family portraits before the grand entrance and reception.

The Three Vianni's

Started off right away with the first dance, father-daughter, mother-son dances. Very special moments, and for my blog followers, one of my favorite parts of a wedding.

After the dances and dinner, started with the speeches and again those were a lot of fun, emotional, funny :) The best time to capture emotion.

After the speeches, had a little downtime to do cut the cake and get that served before a big suprise from Vianni's brother Antonio. He hired this group to come in to get the party started. Talk about energy... I have never seen anything like it. It was my first Spanish wedding, and this group was playing up beat, fun music to get the dance going. It was so much fun to see everyone doing the salsa and related dances. What an experience to see Antonio and Vianni doing a little salsa with some attitude.

Time for the boquet and garder toss'

I don't think they could have asked for a better day to get married in beautiful Puerto Rico.

I want to send out a huge thankyou to everyone at their wedding for making it the most memorable day of their lives. I was honored to be a part of it, and capture all their memories with all of you there sharing it with them. I know it meant a lot to them for all of you making the trip down there to share it with them.

Congrats to both Vianni and Jesse's families on your new family editon, and thank you for making me feel welcome at your son and daughter's wedding.

2011 95.7 The Rock Calendar

What another fun year, shooting the 95.7 The Rock Calendar. 12 chics, 12 locations, and Brian from the Morning Sickness. I guess the only thing to complain about was a couple of the shoots, not the shoots themselves, but the weather. Wow was it hot and humid!

For some of you that don't know what the 95.7 The Rock Calendar is, it's girls in lingerie and swimsuits. Every year 95.7 The Rock puts this amazing calendar together to raise money for the Rock Foundation which helps families in need around the greater La Crosse area. ALL of the proceeds go to The Rock Foundation, and they usually sell 2000-3000 calendars every year for this great cause.

Enjoy a handful of images. To see the rest of the images go pick up a rock calendar for $10 bucks at numerous locations. 201 State Street at the Midwest Family broadcast building Mon-Fri 8-5pm. Allison + Logan - The Mount Charleston Trash the Dress session

Oh I knew today was going to be fun, Mount Charleston conservation area and park just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. We took off about 10am this morning North on I 15 towards Salt Lake City Utah to Mount Charleston for another "Trash the Dress" session with Logan and Allison.

We had to make a pit stop at the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" sign to get a shot of them. We got out into the park and didn't even know where to start, it was simply amazing. Mountains, different rock formations, hiking trails, etc. After shooting for a bit, we made a lunch stop at Mount Charleston lodge for home made pizza and burgers..mmmhmmm. Time to go home tomorrow, back to my beautiful wife and handsome puppy dog and of course the cold weather and snow soon. Allison + Logan - The Valley of Fire Trash the Dress

Logan went and grabbed the rental car this morning around 10am, and we all met up around 12:30 or so and took off the Valley of Fire State Park for their first of two "Trash the Dress" sessions. We had a great time, and it was amazing to see all of these red rock formations and mountains. Was a perfect day to photograph, about 60 degrees and a slight breeze... Enjoy

Allison + Logan - The Las Vegas Wedding

I was so excited for this wedding, and it came up so fast. All summer of weddings, preparing for my own wedding, that came and past, then two more La Crosse area weddings, and now living my dream of some day traveling to do what I love the best, photograph weddings. Well here I am in Las Vegas, Nevada, photographing Allison and Logan's special day.

Logan and Allison came over to my place to talk weddings awhile back and were trying to figure out a reception hall in La Crosse and destination weddings came into conversation....They both looked at each other and were ear to ear with smiles. I got an email....and I was going to Las Vegas!

I started up in one of Allison's good friends rooms Kristin, who I've known for several years going back to the Wal-Mart Photo Lab days. The girls were getting ready, doing hair, putting make up on, and getting dressed. After the girls got ready, we jumped in a limo and went to "The Wedding Chapel" for the ceremony.

It was probably one of the fastest ceremonies I have ever shot, considering the chapel does 25-50 weddings on average PER DAY on prime Saturday's during the rush wedding season. After about the 7 minute ceremony, I had literally 7 minutes to photograph the posed family portraits in the chapel before we had to get out before the next wedding. Logan and Allison both only had 1 person stand up for them, Allison had her sister Courtney as her maid of honor and Logan had a best friend Jason stand up as his best man. They had a great turn out with about 20 close family and friends make it to Vegas for their wedding.

After we left the Chapel in the limo, we went back to the Mirage to grab a quick snack and something to drink before Logan and Allison wanted to go out for a quick "romantic" session with me out on the strip and by the hotel.

After our session, we walked back to the hotel to relax for a bit and kick out feet up before a dinner with everyone that made it out to Vegas. We went to the "Stack" which was a high end restaurant in the hotel. After dinner, the plan was to go out and take some pictures with Courtney, Jason, Allison, Logan, Ryan and I on the strip with all the lights. We all really wanted to see the water and light show at the Bellagio, and they wanted some pictures in front of some of the bigger resorts.

It was a great time shooting in the city and walking the strip with the newly weds, but now on for what Allison and Logan hired me for........TRASH THE DRESS - VEGAS STYLE....

Today we are heading out to Valley of Fire State Park, just outside of Vegas for an amazing session out in the desert, and then on Tuesday, hopefully heading out to the Grand Canyon for another session.

Becki + Andy - The Wedding

Well just got back from my own honeymoon in Aruba. Heather and I had an amazing time, even with getting the tail end of hurricane Tomas with rain almost every day, but we did get atleast two days of sun.

Back to work :) A lot going on this week with trying to wrap up "The Gym" calendar, un-packing, then re-packing for this weekend's wedding in VIVA LAS VEGAS! A lot of work to do before I head out, but going to be a great five days with Allison and Logan out in the desert.

Now to Becki + Andy....What a great way to end my 2010 wedding season the the La Crosse area. Perfect day, great couple to work with and we all had a blast.

Started coverage around 10:30am at the Church getting ready with the bridesmaids. Becki and Andy came over a few days before the wedding to tie up some loose ends with details and timeline, and mentioned a few things that were important to them to get some images of, and one of the most important things to Becki was the miniature set, two little girls and a little boy. The bridesmaids all had different colored umbrellas which made for some really fun images.

As soon as Becki was in her dress, she was so anxious to see the Mr. Handsome Andy. We set up a little moment outside of the church and had a couple minutes to do a mini session of the two before the ceremony.

After some group images of the girls, it was time for the ceremony. After the ceremony we finished up some family posed images, and took off the Riverside Park for some group images and some of Becki and Andy in the International Friendship Garden on the north end of the park. Andy proposed on the bottom of the little bride inside the garden next to the pond, so they wanted a couple shots of their special place there.

Another big part of Becki and Andy's life is their little pup Lucky. Becki's Dad was kind enough to run home after the ceremony, grab Lucky and bring him down to Riverside park to get a few shots of the family :)

After photographing the party and the couple at Riverside, they wanted to stop at a few bars downtown before the ceremony. Becki and Andy met at Brother's bar on Pearl Street, and wanted some shots of them downtown. What a perfect day for an October wedding. Temperature was just right, not hot, and not cold. My second shooter, Eric and I spent about 45 minutes or so with Becki and Andy, and I wanted them to go off with their wedding party and have a couple drinks and some fun for an hour or so before the reception.

Becki and I came up with a great idea for their "Thank You" cards, Eric ran inside and grabbed a pen and here is our idea!

As Eric and I were photographing them downtown in some alley's behind Cheap Shots, I looked up, the amazing blue sky with almost popcorn shapped clouds, I wanted to get a neat shot of the couple and the sky to show off their beautiful October wedding day weather.

We were walking towards the new bus Station on 3rd Street, and I was trying to find another sky image, the image above didn't cut it for me. We were standing on the sidewalk next to the Enterprise Rent-A-Car parking lot, and the sign was just to the left of them, but I wanted a different angle.....So we got away from the sign, and were in the middle of the parking lot of all the rental cars as you can see pictured below (Thanks Eric for the perspective) and here is what we got :) one of my favorite shots of the day.

Now as far as thinking of a creative shot for their rings, I wanted them to think of all the good times they had downtown together, for them to remember all the memories when they look at their ring shot.

As Eric and I left downtown, I went into the one and only Peanut Pub bar (Cheap Shots) and grabbed a plastic cup full of salted in shell peanuts to take to the reception hall to play around with before the wedding party arrived.

This was one of the most fun receptions I've seen. To get the couple to kiss, you either had to come up and tell a story about the couple, or do a funky dance. After the speaches all of the bridesmaids were followed by the Bride herself for "THE THRILLER" and they all had a blast, well as you can tell the girls on the left didn't really know "The Thriller", but the girls on the right sure did. As far as the little guy Kenny.....He didn't know what to do!

Time for the Grand March, and the first dances. Again, what a great wedding to wrap up my 2010 wedding season in the La Crosse area. So much emotion, my favorite thing to photograph.

Amy + Kyle - The Wedding

I was excited about this wedding, to be a part of Kyle and Amy's wedding. I've known Kyle and the Roth family since I could remember. Playing pretty much any sport all summer long from sun up to sun down either at the Roth residence or at the Anderson's. Playing roller hockey and hitting the Roth garage door with a slap shot from the end of the driveway, or playing hide and go seek during 4th of July through everyone's backyards with all the neighborhood kids. Playing tackle football with Kyle's older brothers, Corey and Chris without pads on. Playing Ken Griffey Jr's Homerun Derby on Super Nintendo on rainy days, or having bike races to see who can get to Skogen field the fastest. Playing horse in their front yard, trying to throw the ball halfway over the house and hitting Bill's blue Ford F-150 with TCI decals on it. I'll never forget all of those great memories growing up with those three Roth brothers.

Now they are all grown up, Chris is already married with a beautiful little girl who you will see in some of these images below, and now the youngest just got married. I was honored to be a part of your day and excited to tell your wedding day story.

I started with the bridesmaids at the church getting ready around 12:30 in the afternoon before doing some of the guy's formal posed pictures in the church as well as the girls.

After the girls were all ready, and Amy in her dress we did as many posed pictures with the two of them seeing eachother as we could, so we had more time with just the two of them and the wedding party after the ceremony.

Just before the ceremony, I took Kyle down an empty staircase/hallway in the back of the sanctuary to do a quick portrait and to give him a chance to be alone for a few minutes to relax. I asked him how he was feeling and he answered, "I can't believe this is here already, it doesn't even feel real yet."

Time for the ceremony, as Amy and her father Dave walked down the aisle, neither of them like being the center of attention and hate being photographed, they did a fantastic job at looking natural instead of trying to hide their faces with a program or their hands :) We didn't have good luck with Chris' little flower girl Kaydence, but she's just so darn cute, even if she is crying.

After the ceremony we had a little bubble fest outside for the bride and groom to walk out and I grabbed this one of a little one blowing bubbles :)

After the short bubble fest outside, their immediate family came back into the church to finish up the formal posed portraits in the church. The wedding bus showed up, I told the wedding party to head out to the bus and that I was going to take Amy and Kyle up the road from the church to photograph them yet with some fall colors.

As I was putting my lights away with my 2nd photographer Eric Wuennenberg, Amy and Kyle were sitting towards the back of the church with no one else around and Eric tapped my shoulder and pointed back toward them.....I grabbed my camera and snapped off this image. It was a really neat image because it was just the two of them all alone in the church after their ceremony and I love the emotion of it.

Amy and Kyle both wanted to take the wedding party down to Myrick Park to do some more fun pictures with the entire group, and a couple more with just the two of them before we went back to the reception which was held at 7 Bridges Restuarant in Onalaska.

I would like to thank Eric, my second photographer for coming along to be a part of their day as well, and for getting a couple shots of me with the girls.

After about 45 minutes with the Kyle, Amy and the wedding party, they got back in the bus and went up to 7 Bridges. Amy had told me at the church she wanted some with her and Kyle by the reception hall too before they went in to mingle with all of their guests. It was a nice little break for them to get away and relax alone for a quick portrait session before the big party, here is what we got.

Party time....What a great group, this wedding was a blast because I knew about %50 of all the people, nice to be able to catch up with old friends, and parents that used to watch us kids play sports every weekend, day in and day out. Grand march for the wedding party, Kyle and Amy's first dance as husband and wife, Father-Daughter, and Mother-Son.

Amy and her father did fantastic, and I actually think they got less and less camera shy throughout the night :)

Congrats to Amy and Kyle, what a great couple, knowing Kyle since we were in elementary school, and knowing Amy since middle school. It was an honor to be a part of your special day, and I had an amazing time telling your story through my camera. Thanks for working with me guys!
